Study on the Changes in Vocabulary in National Language Textbooks for Middle and High Schools in Korea and Japan

By consulting the “distribution according to semantic areas,” this study aims to identify changes in the vocabulary in national language textbooks that were in use in 2015 in middle and high schools in Korea and Japan. This study also aims to identify the socio-cultural characteristics of the two countries by verifying whether the use of vocabulary for each stage is appropriate. For this purpose, the “Vocabulary Table for National Language Education for Different Levels” (Kim, GwangHae 2003, National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics 2001) of the two countries was applied. An analysis based on Bunrui Goihyo (1964) shows that, as for the total number of words, those related to abstract relations, human activities, and behavior increase, whereas those related to human beings, products, and natural objects decrease in both countries as the level of education increases. Classification by educational level from 0 to 5 of the top 10% of high frequency vocabulary shows that the differences among school levels are apparent in Korean textbooks. However, in books used in middle and high schools in Japan, the level of difficulty of the vocabulary was higher than in their Korean counterparts. Further study would extend the scope of research to the entire vocabulary, and clarify the distribution of vocabulary by educational level according to items in relation to meaning distribution to further elucidate the socio-cultural characteristics of the two countries.
