The current study has examined the loanwords that appeared in the works of Arishima Takeo among the authors who were active during the Taisho(大正) period. Various loanwords were used by Arishima Takeo, and specifically, we focused on the lexical characteristics and notation of those loanwords. The significance of our study is not only just examination of Arishima’s works but also determination of the status of the then usage of different loanwords. First, all diet-related words were extracted from Takeo Arishima’s Book No. 1 to No. 7 published by Shofun Kaku. Next, those words were divided into 6 categories-‘vegetables and fruits’, ‘cooking’, ‘confectioneries’, ‘beverages’, ‘food-related appliances’, and ‘others.’ They were analyzed in regard to entry time and original language. The combined use (ゆれ) of loanword notation used by Arishima Takeo was also examined. If a loanword was derived from several works of Arishima according to the above categories, it was inferred as widely used instead of any specific work’s usage. Such words were regarded as ‘frequently used’by Arishima Takeo. In connection with the loanword entry background, the loanwords from English and the loanwords entered during the Meiji period constituted the largest portion, followed by loanwords from Dutch and loanwords entered during the Edo period. Furthermore, based on the number of works with the appearance of the target words and on the total number of appearance of the target words, the words that were frequently used by Arishima were identified.
