Iku/Kuru」and 「Kata/Ota」 with Examples : Focusing on the Relationship between the Speaker and the Arrival Point

Focusing on the relationship between the speaker and the arrival point, the present study has considered the characteristics of 「Iku/Kuru(go/come)」 and 「Kata/Ota(go/come)」 used in a scene where a speaker and a listener move together from the place of utterance. In Japanese, if the place of utterance is the starting point, both「Iku(go)」 and 「Kuru(come)」 may be used. However, if the speaker is the central figure, such as a resident or owner of the arrival point or an organizer or planner of the event held at the arrival point, 「Kuru(come)」 should be used to indicate the speaker’s connection with the arrival point. 「Kuru(come)」 does not express the movement of the moving subject, itself, but rather that the arrival point has a deep relationship with the speaker, and that such movement has occurred in regard to the speaker. Therefore, the use of 「Kuru(come)」 signifies recommendation or permission by the speaker to accept the listener in his/her area. On the other hand, the Korean 「Kata/Ota (go/come)」 relates to the physical factors such as the starting and arrival points, and thus, the movement going far from the arrival point is referred to as 「Kata(go)」 and the movement coming toward the arrival point is referred to as 「Ota(come)」.
