Function of Laughter as a Quotative Marker : Laughter with Zero-Marked Quotative Form in Conversation

The current study focused on zero-marked quotative form and discussed how laughter can function as a quotative marker. When viewed from a spatial perspective, it becomes clear whether the original utterance is shared within or outside a conversation. When the original utterance is within the conversation, laughter accompanying quotations signifies the place ‘where to laugh’, or objectification of the punchline, and then it plays the role of a quotative marker. When the original utterance is outside the conversation, there are two different types of zero-marked quotative. One is hypothetical self-quotation, whose original utterances are objectified as self-utterances, i.e. speaking toward others. The other is the sequence of quotations from others including objectified self, producing a theatrical scene in the conversation. The laughter accompanying the hypothetical self-quotations not only represents mental attitude toward the original utterance, but also the fact that the speaker is quoting; in other words, laughter is functioning as a quotative marker. In a theater scene with sequence of quotations, the speaker plays either double roles or single role. In this pattern of zero-marked quotative, they include the laughter as quotative markers, which represent the mental attitude to the fact that the speaker is making a quotation.
