Techno-Animism : Vitality of things in Japanese Technoscientific Practice

Lee, Kangwon

This study is an attempt to establish a new direction for the phenomenon of animism that is unfolding in Anthropology and to use it as a foothold, to weave my previous research on the Japanese region with the term ‘techno-animism’. First, I explore the process by which animism is newly defined within the debate of the ontological turn of Anthropology. Next, I discuss the existing research that can be used to discover elements of animism in technoscientific practice – the core of modern rationality. In this way, I discuss whether it is possible to attribute vitality to things in technoscientific practice, and if so, how animism can contribute to technoscientific discovery and innovation, and further, how techno-animism can contribute to developing sensory and responsive capabilities regarding planetary-scale issues. ‘Techno-animism’ is a term and phenomenon that has received the attention of numerous researchers in various fields of Japanese animation, Shinto and media art. The contribution of this study lies in its discussion of the elements of techno-animism in the context of the key fields of technoscientific practice: the laboratories, research institutes, information networks, etc. In this way, this study has the following significance. First, the animistic elements that are mediated by technology in the field of scientific practice can contribute to technoscientific creativity. Nest, techno-animism suggests pluriversal politics to respond to planetary-scale issues such as climate change and the mass extinction of organism.
