1980년대 이회성의 활동과 소설 「협죽도」 연구
본 논문은 이회성의 전환기이자 1970년대와 1990년대의 문학세계를 잇는 가교로서의 1980년대에 주목하여 고찰해보았다. 1980년대는 남북 조국의 체제 고착화와 이념대립이 격화되는 현실 속에서 재일조선인 사회도 이에 직접적인 영향을 받기 시작했다. 전기 문 학세계에서 남한의 민주화에 적극적인 관심을 표명해온 이회성은 ‘좌경학생을 고무한다’ 라는 이유로 남한의 민주화에 적극적으로 관여할 수 없게 되었다. 나아가 1981년의 사할 린 방문을 통해 이회성은 기존의 ‘분단 조국의 땅 안에서 살고 있는 존재’로서의 민족을 넘어 코리안 디아스포라로 상징되는 넓은 범위의 민족에 대해 인식하게 된다. 당시의 이 회성에게 있어 정치성의 탈피와 코리안 디아스포라를 아우르는 민족의 재정의는 동시대 적 화두로 자리매김했고, 이를 위해 전기 작품세계에서 보여온 ‘조국지향’을 넘어선 새로 운 형태의 공통정신이 요구되게 된다. 1980년대의 이회성이 주목한 ‘문화’는 바로 이러한 지점에서 대두되게 되는 것이다. 당시 그가 주목한 ‘문화’는 점차 ‘보편적 공감대’로서의 휴머니즘으로 확장되게 된다. 그리고 이는 1990년대의 후기 작품세계로 이어지게 되는 것이다. 이러한 지점에서 1980 년대의 이회성의 유일한 작품 「협죽도」는 1980년대의 이회성의 ‘과도기’를 명확하게 드 러내는 작품이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 이 작품은 당대의 현실적 문제 속에서 재일조선인과 조국의 지식인들이 어떠한 의식으로 협력관계를 구축해 나갔는지를 드러내고 있다. 나아 가 이 작품은 이러한 협력관계 속에서 ‘정치성’을 뛰어넘고자 하는 ‘문화’의 힘과 그 가능 성에 주목하고 있는 작품이기도 하다.

A Study on Lee Hoesung's Activities in the 1980s and His Novel Named Hyeopjukdo
This study focused on the 1980s as a turning point for Lee Hoesung. In the 1980s, the Zainichi society began to be directly affected by the ideological confrontation between the North and South Koreas. Lee Hoesung, was unable to participate actively in the democratization of South Korea due to dictatorship rule. Furthermore, through his visit to Sakhalin in 1981, Lee Hoesung became aware of a wide range of ethnic groups beyond the existing “natural beings living in the land of the divided country” For Lee Hoesung at the time, departure from politics and redefining the nation encompassing the Korean diaspora became contemporary topics. For this, a new form of common spirit that transcends the “motherland” was required. The “culture” that Lee Hoesung paid attention to in the 1980s emerged at this point. At that time, the “culture” he paid attention to gradually expanded into humanism as a “universal consensus”, on which he wrote several novels later in the 1990s. Furthermore, Hyeopjukdo, Lee Hoesung's only novel in the 1980s, can be said to be a work that clearly revealed Lee Hoesung's “transition period” in the 1980s.
